In this town, the only part where you can hide is, well.. nowhere. Except maybe in your house.

In the first few days of the game, it is generally recommended to upgrade to Tent (costs 2 Small pa.gif, uses no resources) but not to Hovel, which costs 6 Small pa.gif that could be better used on Small gather.gifSmall gather.gifScavenging Scavenging and Item metal beam.gifItem metal beam.gifConstruction Sites construction.

Personal Chest

You can keep items in the Personal Chest in your House. Your chest begins with a capacity of 4 slots, but can be expanded in several different ways. Keep in mind that people can steal from your personal chest while you are out of town. Each citizen is allowed to rob once per day. Robberies will be recorded in the Gazette, if the thief is detected.

Recycle Home

Residents who have died can also have their homes pillaged (works like a normal robbery). Note that items carried in rucksack are automatically placed in the chest of the deceased.

15 Small pa.gif are required to recycle a home to recover items in the chest and a chance to recover some of the items used to upgrade it (usually not worth it unless they've upgraded their home quite a bit and invested items in it, or if you need to plunder their home fast).

Sample text when you check their home:

You can recycle the house where ____[resident] lived. Everything found inside (i.e. in the inventory) will be placed in the bank. There is also a chance you could recover some of the materials used to build it.

Small recycled.gif is placed beside their home after you have successfully recycled their home.

Sample text when you finish recycling a home, In this case an empty hovel:

You have finished dismantling †[resident]'s house! All the objects that were in his chest are now in the Bank. The town didn't recover anything useful from their house, there was really nothing of interest to take...

The text also appears in the bank log and gazette.

Defence

Improving your home slightly increases your chance of surviving when zombies break through the gates during Small fight.gifSmall fight.gifThe Attack The Attack. However you generally survive much longer if you work with your citizens to improve the town defence.

After the first upgrade, you will also be able to carry out your own home projects if you are a hero.

House provides defence, which is the sum of House points, Improvements, Defensive Objects, and Hero Bonuses.

Season 4 onwards, each Citizen's home contributes 40% of the reported amount to the Town's over all Defence count. For example, a Hovel by itself provides 3 Defence to that citizen and 1.2 Defence to the Town. It was 50% in pre Season 3. The defences gained from Item wood plate.gifItem wood plate.gifFence Fence and Item fence.gifItem fence.gifReinforcements Reinforcements do contribute to the town's defences.

However, once you have gotten to some of the more experienced towns (distant region), tent building will be discouraged unless you are a hero, in which case you can build house upgrades inside your tent. It is considered a waste of AP that could be used to scavenge farther or to build basic structures at construction sites.

You can only upgrade your home once per day unless the town is in chaos mode.

If the town has Small strategy.gifSmall strategy.gifBuilders' Merchant Builders' Merchant built, you unlock home upgrades past Upgrade house3.gifUpgrade house3.gifHouse House.

As of Season 3, House (level 4) no longer protects home from theft. It is Air-Raid Shelter and higher level homes that are now protected.

As of Season 4, Air-Raid Shelter (level 5) has been renamed Safehouse. Resources requirements, defense and built-in theft protection are the same as Seaons 3.

Home Improvements

Playing as a Small hero.gifSmall hero.gifHero Hero get access to special home improvements, which last until the end of the current game. Many of the home upgrades require active usage, and are inaccessible if you lose Hero status later on. However, passive upgrades, such as Chest and Defence improvements, should remain fully functional. Additional Defence provided to the Hero's home does increase the town's defence beyond the building's normal value.

To build any home improvement, you must first have built a Tent.

Unlike home upgrade which is limited to once per day under normal circumstances, you can upgrade as many times as possible for any kind of home improvements.

When successfully building an improvement:
